Can I just re-do that?

Why, Yes, I can.

I am actually in the middle of 2 seperate “re-do” projects right now.

The first is online. I am re-doing my website for Crystal City Fibers, in an attempt to lower my bounce rate. (for those not web savvy, bounce rate is the percentage of people who click onto a site and right away close the window)

I worried that perhaps the links were not clear, or maybe people could not find that they were actually supposed to buy something… So, I added a nav bar across the top of the page for the links, moving them away from the side, and replaced the single photo with an etsy mini.

Now, I am trying to decide what to do to avoid that feeling that the page is “floating in space”.  I tried an image in the background (here, if you want to see), but several people have told me they think that might be too busy…  I used to have a border, but apparently it took away or distracted from the main text…  So… I am still working on this one.

My other “re-do” project is much more solid based.  I am re-doing my craft room.  I want to totally overhaul it, organize into stations, and reduce the amount of non-crafty things in there to a minimum.

Want to see how badly this needs doing?  I know you do… So here is what my craft room looked like a couple days ago:

My Craft room as of Feb. 1... and why yes, that IS an inflatable ball pit in the foreground...

You can see that I actually have a nice big space, with lots of potential.  (this actually is the living room of our house… we moved our living room to the dining room, though, which used to be my craft room, since I can put a gate up on this room to cut off access better.)

I have no closets, and no hidden storage, though.  And I have this little problem where the room keeps getting used as a dumping ground.  Plus, its the first room you see on entering the house. (directly next to the entrance).

So I really need to work on this.

So far, I have removed at least 90% of the toys.  not including DH’s (the dead computer).  I have switched 2 tables (the one that the drum carder was on with the one under the window) allowing me to turn the drum carder out further into the room AND increasing my surface space because the table that is now under the window has a drop leaf that  gives it an extra 2 feet of length. (it is technically my sewing desk, and, I am happy to say, my sewing machine is once again at home on it)

I have a long way to go though.

I’ve been spending hours everyday (the ones where I have been too sore to move after DOING other things, lol) searching online for inspirations and Ideas how to organize this room.

I am planning on those wire cube storage things or on top of the long dresser on the wall, and I found these cool Clip Rails on another blog… I want to put some up on the wall above my carding station to hang kid art and inspirational pictures.

I also want to buy or make a cool clock to hang on one wall, which would be so much nicer to glance up and look at than always looking to my watch or the computer…

I’d like to get some pegboard to mount above my sewing desk… to hold things like my thread racks (I have 3 full ones), scissors, and jewelry tools… not to mention small items like pins and needles (in small bins of some sort).  I want these things to be within MY reach, but Out of the kids reach, and NOT ON the desk.

You see, this small station, I think, will be used for 3 stations.  It is where my sewing machine lives, and the serger, underneath… it is where I have chosen as a docking station for my new little computer, and it is where I will likely do most of my beadwork.

I have moved all my carding supplies over to the other table (before, the carder and supplies were across the room from one another), so that table will be nothing but Fiber prep.

The round(ish) kitchen table in the center of the room is temporarily off to the side, and will be used as temporary workstation for anything that comes up… fabric cutting, ironing, or a place for the kids to do crafts.

I still have a long way to go.  But I will continue to write about and update how the progress goes on.  And if you have any ideas for me, any little craft room or website inspirations, or any words of advise, please feel free to post them in the comments.

Its been too long… and a little Yarn Every Day

and I am so sorry for that.  I have not posted to the blog here in weeks.  We’ve had quite a few weeks of eventfulness here.  As I meantioned in my last post, I am closing shop on Beeba Bottoms.  though I think I would still offer embroidery service within limits.  I have been running a destash sale on my favorite diaper-making message board for the past week, and have recouped a lot of money, from some fabrics I had almost forgotten I had.  Really, with the business closing, I needed to destash a lot of it… it was just too much.

Of course, this money means I can invest more into my fiber Business, Crystal City Fibers.  and I am investing.  I am buying a drum carder, just as soon as the rest of the money form the destash comes in.

I’ll also be looking to sell off one of my sewing machines, and possibly my poor, neglected fidelis wheel.  between the 2 items, I will have plenty to invest further into more fibers and yarns.

Now, eventually, it would be nice if some of these fibers and yarns were to sell.  With that in mind, there is a new yarn everyday challenge on.  And here are some pictures to go with the challenge. :)

June 1, spun on some fiber from one of the many swaps I am participating in:

yarn-everyday-6-1June 2, finished the bobbin from the day before, and drafted out the slightly compacted (though not felted) fiber for the second bobbin.

June 3, revived some long forgotten fiber that I had been spinning up on my also moslty forgotten fidelis.  this wheel is such a good little wheel, and I neglect it so… I feel guilty.

June 4, spun more on the swap fiber.

June 5,  OMGoodness!  I don;t think I have a picture for the 5th!!  well, I spun more on that same fiber… several hours.  I got it all spun up, so that on the 6th, I could do this:

and with that, the fullest bobbin I have ever done on the bug (a whopping 6.5 ounces, and I could have fit just a little bit more on), I will leave off for today, with the mention that I will update again very soon, adding more yarn everyday, and more good crafty, or family fun!

The move is done…

…and all is well.  I’ve switched over the URL to point to here, left a message at the old Blogspot.com blog to redirect people, in 2 places in the blog, and imported all the old posts here.   I’ve spent hours trying to redesign this new blog to fit with the clean styles of the old one.  And best yet, I am self-hosted here… meaning that if anything does go wrong with the blog or the server, within reason, I can fix it myself, without having to rely on folks who’d rather just send you to cryptically worded blog posts of theirs, rather than answering a question… I really think this was just to raise their own blog views, to be honest.

But, its done.  Now, I am proud owner of 2 self-hosted wordpress blogs, this, and also recently moved from my wordpress.com blog, Crystal City Fibers blog.

Look around, tell me what you think could use improvement, tell me what you like, share a post with someone if you would like, and remember, comments are always welcome… and they may start a little conversation, too.

They’re Mine! All Mine!

Really. For once, I Dyed up fibers just for me. I’ll share them, and better yet, I’ll probably even sell them after they are spun. (cause I love the spinning much more than the knitting, really) But for now, they are mine!

Excuse the not great pics, I promise I’ll get better ones before I spin them up. These are the ones I dyed for the Yarn everyday.

Dream Knitting Bag

On Ravelry, there is a challenge going. The Challenge is to choose your dream knitting bag, and fill it with all the accessories you’d love to have. it is just a fantasy challenge, so you don’t need to actually buy anything, just think it up.

So, Searching, I found this:

Namaste notions case

Which is a Namaste Cali Collection Buddy Notions Case, and retails for $15. I really like the idea of it, and I really love the Pink. The inside walls are magnetized, allowing metallic objects to stay nice and neat inside, and it has an interior divider (removable), to keep things that move separate from the smaller stuff.

I also have a small round felt case that nicely holds the cords and tips for my knitpicks options needles. In my dream knitting bag, it would still be there. it just serves its purpose too well to not keep it.

Felt needle case

Of course, all knitters need a good pair of scissors:

And some Yarn Needles, a tape measure, and at least one small cable needle. I like to keep a small crochet hook in my knitting bag too.

I also have been looking at the Debra’s Garden Gauge Pendants for quite a while. I love how cute and little and round they are, and I think they’d work as a cool Diz, too, for fiber stuff. I have been wanting a new needle gauge for a while, but keep holding off, and this is the one I really want. probably in any color, but I think I like the red, teal, or lavendar best.

cool needle gauge

Of course, for me, there is no question that the needles in my knitting bag would all be knitpicks nickel plated Options set. Ideally, I’d have the full set, and have a small arrangement in my knitting bag. in reality, I have a small arrangement, and they are always in my knitting bag.

Of course, stitch markers should be in every knitter’s bag. I make my own, and have been given quite a few, but I still found recently I needed to buy a small pack of the cheap plastic ring ones, for some fine lace knitting. The little box they came in is the right size to hold other nicer stitch markers, and I think that would be included in my list of contents.

I don’t do Row counters for the most part. I might include, though, some row markers with the stitch markers.

For the bag itself… well, My readers will have seen already my new purse? I think it is already my dream knitting bag, for smaller projects. I can fit 2 small projects in it at once, still leaving space for a diaper (for my Beeba 2), my wallet, and other personal items.
