The newest addition…

to my Fiber Tools Arsenal will be…

… a lovely Antique Canadian Production Wheel!

This one, to be precise:

She is old and desperately needs a good bath, but she is mine (as soon as I send payment, lol)

I will decide exactly how much to do to her when she gets here, but for now, my plan is a bath with good old fashioned murphy’s oil soap, and a good scrub of the hardware with steel wool and oil.  (that is, the treadle and the tensioning unit, which are made of Cast iron, and look fairly rusted)

Yep, if you know even the least bit about wheels, you might have realized that she is missing a critical part – the footman, which is the part that goes from the treadle to the wheel… Don’t worry, I have that taken care of.  CPWs were made to have a thin rod of cast iron as a footman.  I don’t have cast iron, but I do have old thick metal coat hangers, which will work just fine.  Should I decide I want something more solid down the line, I will pick up a steel rod at the hardware store and bend that to shape.  Either the coat hanger or the steel rod can be spray painted to match the cast iron if I feel the need.

To fund this lovely creature, I have been having a sale in my Etsy Shop.  I have made my goal, (in an amazingly short amount of time) and by rights, should be ending the sale today.  But, as a thanks to all the people who have helped me make my goal, and to make sure that all my blog readers have a chance at it, I have decided to keep the sale going until tomorrow afternoon.

With Code CPW in the purchase notes, get 15% off of anything in the shop (not including shipping or custom prices).  Only till tomorrow, mind… after that, this sale is done!

I am also thinking that after I have my new pretty home, I will probably be feeling generous.  Keep a look out for a naming contest on the blog sometime in the next couple weeks… there might be a pretty prize up for grabs…

Now, dear Blog readers, would you like to know how I came to ind this lovely wheel?  I had, in fact, stopped looking for a “new” old wheel… I had decided that I could not take the time and energy required to look, to drive out to see wheels, or to do possibly all sorts of rehab on an old wheel in who knows what condition…

And then arrived the hoard.

Yup.  I said it.  Out in Michigan, in fact.  There sat over 100 old wheels, all lonely creatures, recently rescued in an estate sale from where they had languished without a spinner’s company for somewhere around 80 years.

Apparently, back in the Great Depression, there were a lot of people who no longer were able to make a living wage for their families by spinning production amounts of thread and yarn.  Makes sense, as by that time, there were factories making those things in bulk amounts.  Well, these people needed to eat, and so they brought their wheels, which had previously been the means of their survival, to 2 brothers, who had opened one of the very earliest pawn shops.

Over the course of time, these brothers ammassed a very large collection of wheels and all sorts of other things.  Of course, the wheels are where our interest lies today.

After the brothers’ deaths, there was an estate sale, where, of course, as I mentioned before, the lot of wheels was bought.  Happily, they were bought by a couple who, while they did not yet know anything about spinning, were interested in learning, and in re-uniting these wheels with loving homes where they would be once again, nourished, nurtured, and most importantly, SPUN ON.

They spent some time trying to match wheels by themselves, cleaning them as best they knew how, and listing them on Ebay.  These early sorting adventures, I am told, were not always the most accurate, as the couple had no prior knowledge of spinning wheels, or how they functioned, and even less knowledge about antique wheels.  BUT, it brought the hoard to the attention of the Ravelry CPW Lovers group.  That’s when one of the members there stepped in and got involved in the process.

after one successful trip to the hoard and back which resulted in several wheels being united with happy spinners, she decided to return again, and spent a day there, during which, using descriptions given by members of the group for “desired traits” in wheels, she and the lovely owner of the hoard sorted and found wheels for quite a few other happy spinners. (that’s where I come in)

My description was rather simple.  All I wanted  was a Complete, Functional, wood colored (not painted), Iron treadle wheel.  Normally, that is a tough description to fill in a day.  But not at the hoard, cause they did great!

Now, for the moment, that is where the story leaves off.  But really, you have to know that this will really only begin a much longer journey, as first, the wheel arrives, and must be named, and cleaned up.  Then, I’ll have to learn its nuances (I am told even the most experienced spinners have a learning curve with these large beauties).  Then, eventually, though not till summer, I may decide, depending on the state of the wheel’s finish, to begin the process of re-finishing to its original condition.

So stay tuned, and watch for updates in the CPW saga!

Photo Friday

Yikes!  I had a very busy Photo Friday today!  But, I have pictures.  Later than usual, but here they are!

I haven't come up with a name for this one yet, maybe you can think of something. This is Merino/Silk yarn, and there is about 450 yards in 4oz here. Lovely, lovely yarn!

This one is Superwash BFL, 3 ply. I haven't measured the WPI yet, but looking, I think it is probably about a sport weight, and there is somewhere between 250-300 yards here. (I promise, I do have it written down, its just not here in front of me at the moment.)

Merino yarn, spun somewhat thick and thin on one ply (mostly towards the thick side), and thin on the other ply. It has a really cool effect, that wavy look I am starting to love.

This is my very first Art yarn, all washed and whacked. It really came out very cool, and is basically a thread-wrapped yarn with little coiled cocoons every few inches. This was spun from my own layered batts, one of which will be in the shop very soon.

A close-up shot of that Art Yarn

Sherbert Swirls - This is Punta fiber I got in a swap a while ago, one white ply and one blue and green ply. Very pretty!

Uraguayan Merino - so pretty and soft!

Finally, the Fiber! This one is "Electric". It is a blend of merino and firestar, and it was MEANT to be peacocky batts... but you know what? This does not say peacock to me. It says more of-- Electric! So there you are.

And this one. This is a blended Batt version of my Earthy Princess colorway. I haven't done Earthy Princess in a long time, but it was a colorway I very much loved. So here it is again, with a happy blend of about 70% merino, 30% bamboo!

Ok, so I was late posting my Photo Friday pics.  But you know, I really think you can understand why, with all these new things ready and waiting to be listed in the shop.  Each of these will be listed at some time over the next 2 weeks, so keep an eye out if you like something.  I will try to get at least one of them listed over this weekend, and then more after that!

New Workspace, New Yarns

So, we know I’ve been working on my craft room.  As it turns out, I’ve made a lot of progress with it.  I won’t bore you with old pictures, you can see those on older posts.  But I WILL show off some new ones.

Of course, I still have a few things left to work on.  But we are making GREAT progress here.

See the difference here? I have WORKSPACE! and the laundry monster is gone, lol... for now. I still plan for some shelves over the laundry space.

I've since re-cleared the desk and the table (and re-uncleared them too, lol) But really, on the desk, all that is full time is the sewing machine, lamp, and phone, so that is pretty good I think.

A Close up of the space over the desk, with my new cork boards and organizer. Total cost of these pretties? $7 for the corks that came in a set of 4 (still have 2 left) and the thumbtacks I turned into pins with beads and buttons. WIN!

This basket I made at a basket weaving class. It was meant in this space to hold only current carding projects and carding tools. I think I went slightly overboard on my dyeing day, and overfilled my ready-to-card drawer. So now the basket is holding some pretty colors of ready to card fiber too.

Ok.  Have you seen enough pictures?

Well, how about one more.  I wasn very productive this weekend.  On the spinning front.  Over the course of the weekend, and Friday, I finished spinning and/or Plying all these yarns:

The Pink is Uruguayan Merino, the dark green is Merino/silk, and the green and blue plyed with white is Punta. Yummy, aren't they??

It’s Snowing!

And I’m Glad, in most ways.  We have had a very Odd winter so far.  Most winters, around here, by now we would have had at least a few big snows, where the kids would be out playing, building snowmen (or snow piles, being that my kids are 3 and 1, lol), and making a fun mess.

This year, we have not had so much as an inch at any one time.

That is why, I am glad to say, that this is the view out my window right now:

My sewing/computer desk faces straight out this window, and I love the view right now.

It’s good that it is snowing.  It means that the kids can play in the snow later when Daddy gets home, and our area needs the snow…

On the other hand, snow means that I do not know who will attend my regular knitting night.  Several ladies who attend drive a fair distance to get here, and one walks (I’m not sure how far).

But, all in all, snow is good.

On other fronts, My craft room re-do is coming nicely.  I am progressing well with the changes I am making.  I found corkboard squares that I am going to cover with this fabric:

Isn't it pretty? it is an Alexander Henry fabric, and I found it in the bottom of my fabric dresser. a whole yard!

I finally moved my thread racks, so they are no longer sitting all over the room on random nails in the wall, and now they have a permanent home, and I am going to make some hanging organizers out of beading wire and beads and plastic canvas to organize my sewing and jewelry tools.

I haven’t been very “on schedule” this week with my naptime schedule.  Monday, I spun as planned, but I was so on a roll that yesterday, I just spun too!  I finished plying 2 different skeins of yarn, and got 3 skeins washed and hung to dry (to set the twist).  I also finished the singles on another pretty pink yarn, and I am plying it today as I get time.

I still have a long way to go with the craft room.  I’ll post more pictures as I get more noticeable changes into place.  And of course, I am always spinning and making new yarns and fibers.

For now, adieu.  See you on Photo Friday!
